I am extremely lucky to teach in a very large, urban, dual-mission public high school which focuses on both the arts and academics. My intelligent, enthusiastic, motivated, talented, creative, and hard-working students come from diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic levels.
I need to be able to do my job efficiently so I can best help my students; my current, dysfunctional laptop doesn't allow this.
My school laptop is opened and used from the moment I arrive at school until I leave. I need a functioning laptop. Sadly, my current laptop is on its last legs. The keyboard does not function well; some letters/numbers/command buttons don't react at all when pushed, or they over-react and cause repeated letters and numbers.
I use this laptop to correspond with parents, students and staff. I also use it to check homework, comment on homework, take attendance and input grades. I edit lessons, tests, homework, fill out forms for students and write recommendations on this laptop. I also attend online meetings, create DeltaMath practices and complete PDs my laptop.
Unfortunately, this laptop at school is making my work difficult and unnecessarily time-consuming. A sentence that should take twenty seconds to type may take two minutes because I have to go back and try to get the spacebar to separate words, undo repeated letters and put in missing letters. Because numbers have issues, too, sometimes it takes several attempts to log onto DOE websites and because there is often a quick timeout, I have to keep doing it. This issue also makes inputting grades much more time-consuming than it should be.
