My Students

I work in a school with students from a variety of backgrounds whose learning levels vary greatly. Our population is very culturally and socially diverse. Many of our students are new to the United States and are learning to speak and read English.

Our school has active library and talent programs.

Students come with their classes, and also independently during homeroom and their lunch periods. They use the library for projects, to borrow books, to use desktop computers and Chromebooks, and also to attend book club meetings. Students also choose between art, music, dance, band and string orchestra classes.

My Project

Eighty percent of my school's expanding orchestra program consists of 6th graders. Fifty percent of our violins are too big for most 6th graders. We are starting from scratch, with our youngest students while coming back from the shut-downs.

Appropriately sized instruments are easier and more comfortable to play, and sound better.

Eleven- and twelve-year-olds typically learn on half size or three-quarter size violins. They can reach the full length of the fingerboard and keep their bows straight. They can play with confidence, and with less tension, and will enjoy orchestra class more.
