Teaching in NYC can be very challenging but in the end its very rewarding. Working in a public school and in an urban community, resources at times are difficult to come upon. I currently teach sixth grade in a junior high school. NYC has implemented a new reading program which is balanced literacy. My classroom library is very weak which therefore limits me to the type of genres I want to study with my children.
This balanced reading program requires that student read a book of their interest at their comfortable reading level. Also, there are many genres that need to be covered throughout the year such as, non-fiction, biographies, realistic fiction, social issues, adventure books, historical fiction, and poetry. Each month there are book clubs were children branch off into groups and read their books and have meaningful discussions about the characters, setting, plot, theme, etc. There are times when multiple copies of books are needed.
Overall, I intend to use this library with these three ultimate goals: to increase enjoyment in reading, to encourage students to pursue independent reading at appropriately challenging levels, and to improve reading fluency and comprehension. This will create a positive reading environment.
