Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have been working as a teacher in the C. New Jersey school district for 20 plus years teaching sixth, seventh and eighth-grade students who are educationally challenged. This school year our school budget has been cut substantially making it difficult to get the supplies and equipment we need for my students. Our students are faced with a number of problems each day. 42% of them live below the poverty level. Coming to school has been a safe, loving and warm environment for them. They have been accustom to lacking the things at home and because of the budget cut once again they are feeling the lack of materials they need at school.
My class is in desperate need of the literature books for our novel studies to support our mathematics curriculum.
My Project
The book that I have selected is The Toothpaste Millionaire. It will help my students by giving them an opportunity to build vocabulary and develop math skills and concepts which is an integral part of our mathematics program.
Literature is the ideal vehicle to help students see the importance of numbers in their daily lives.
With the new book, my students would be able to use the book to expand their educational experiences. Seeing math in pictures and through highly-engaging stories will help keep them be interested and inquisitive about mathematics. This book would give my students' exposure to real-life mathematical problems that directly corresponds with our curriculum to promote a deeper understanding of mathematics.
