Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have been working as a teacher in this New Jersey school district for 20 plus years teaching sixth, seventh and eighth-grade students who are educationally challenged. This school year our school budget has been cut substantially making it difficult to get the supplies and equipment we need for my students. Our students are faced with a number of problems each day. 42% of them live below the poverty level. Coming to school has been a safe, loving and warm environment for them. They have been accustom to lacking the things at home and because of the budget cut once again they are feeling the lack of materials they need at school.
My class is in desperate need of the literature books for our novel studies to support our literacy curriculum.
My Project
The books that I have selected will help my students by giving them an opportunity to build key reading comprehension skills which is an integral part of our Language Arts Literacy program.
This donation would complete the missing puzzle to support our literacy curriculum.
With the new books, my students would be able to use the books to compare and contrast, identify main idea, use context clues to decipher vocabulary in content, and make predictions about upcoming chapters and events. In addition, these books would increase my students' understanding of complex text that directly correspond with our curriculum to promote a deeper understanding of actual concepts and actually transfer ideas to practice.
According to Anderson, Fielding, and Wilson (1988), students who begin reading a book in school are more likely to continue to read outside of school than students who do not begin a book in school.
