This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"I read the definition and I STILL don't know what the word means!" Unfortunately I hear this often. We need dictionaries with definitions that second grade students can understand.

I teach 20 amazing second graders in a small community outside of Los Angeles.

They come from diverse backgrounds but love learning new things. My students are very hard workers who always try their best. Some students are learning English as a second language and many receive free or reduced lunch.

My Project

Learning the purpose of using reference materials like dictionaries, thesauruses and atlases is a second grade state standard for language arts in California. The dictionaries that we were able to scrounge up are worded way too complexly for my second graders to gain meaning from. If they don't understand the definition they can't adequately learn the word and apply it in their daily lives meaningfully. These dictionaries will allow students to access the meanings of words on a level that they understand and can benefit from. This will help them make progress towards state standards and improve their personal vocabularies.
