Middle schoolers are some of the most rewarding students to teach, and my kids are no exception. They probably teach me more in a day than I teach them. Never in my life have I met a group of students who have such a drive for learning as these do.
We work individually, with partners, and with groups, and my students are always up to whatever challenge that I can throw at them.
Almost all of our students come from low-income households, and the entire school is free lunch. These kids deserve desks that aren’t falling apart, that are big enough to sit in, and where they can work without distraction. They have so much drive and passion to learn, and the last thing that they need to be stressed about is their desks at school.
My Project
The desks in our classroom are older than most of the teachers at our school. They are small, squeaky, broken, rusty, covered in gum, and materials are almost constantly rolling off of them. Students write on their laps, as the desks are not large enough to accommodate their notebooks and computers at once. Not a day goes by where students don’t complain about them.
Our desks do not function in a science classroom.
Science thrives on collaboration, teamwork, and the sharing of ideas — all of which these desks does not allow for. The tops are slanted and of varying sizes, so they can’t match up to form groups. Instead, my students perform STEM experiments and designs on the floor — the only flat surface we have to work on.
I chose high quality hard plastic-topped desks that will stand up to the daily wear and tear of middle schoolers, experiments, and engineering designs that we need of them. They will also be able to be transformed in to single desks, rows, or groups of various sizes, because I change them almost constantly to accommodate the needs of the students or activity. These desks will serve almost 200 students this year alone, and thousands of students over the course of these desks' lifetime.
This is a substantial goal, and every donation counts. Please help me to make my students lives easier, maximize their learning potential, and affect the thousands of kids to come!
