This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

Mrs. Gause from Florence SC is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
The students I teach live in rural, high poverty neighborhoods in Florence, SC. Students have minimal parental support at home and rely on their siblings for guidance with homework, studying, and supervision. My students appreciate what teachers do for them and they enjoy being at school.
Since children do not choose to live in poverty, I have chosen to create a classroom with an abundance of technology so that students can escape to a world where creativity is valued and the possibilities are endless.
I have the privilege of teaching everyone in kindergarten through sixth grade and I make the most the time we have together because the majority of my students have very few opportunities for educational experiences outside of school.
To create a student-centered learning environment, students rotate through technology stations with coding and robotics rather than spend 45 minutes keyboarding or creating presentations in the computer lab. The robots requested in this project meet the needs of all learners in kindergarten through 6th grade. We currently have three Dash Robots and one Dot Robot for our coding and robotics exploration stations. Unfortunately, some of my classes have about thirty students which make the groups too large to be effective (with only 4 robots). Students should not be deprived of the use of robots because their class is "too large".
The addition of 2 Dash Robots in our exploration stations will help create smaller, more effective groups for coding.
Students will use the Wonder Workshop apps (which are free) to design codes for the Dash robots an use the accessories we currently have in the classroom to create solutions to real-world problems. Donations to this project will allow students to design solutions to real problems using a robot and complete in the 2018 Wonder League Robotics Competition.
