My Project
I teach in school that was built in the 1960s. Over the last 65 years, the number of students in classrooms has doubled, but the size of this room hasn't changed. I teach 5 classes per day and each class will have anywhere from 25-30 students. Most of the desks provided by my school are 2 separate pieces, a desk and a chair. Those desks are great, when I only have 25 students to seat. However, my average class size is 27, which leaves very little room for movement.
This year, I had a student in a wheelchair that required wider aisles to navigate the room.
In an effort to give him and all students more room, I switch my desks to the one piece attached set up. It worked perfectly! However, my school only has 25 desks of this style, leaving half of my room non-navigable.
With this project, I am asking for 2 more attached desks to keep my classroom functional and safe. With more room for students to move, I can encourage collaborative learning. We can utilize station activities and projects with larger groups. More room in the aisles will make entering and exciting more efficient and ultimately safer during emergencies. It will also allow students to move around equally regardless of any physical disability.
