Prior to Hurricane Katrina, I had a complete set of United States/World and Mississippi desk maps. These maps gave my students hands-on experiences with locating given sites, and they were able to actually grasp the concept of latitude and longitude. Students were given coordinates to locate, both latitude and longitude, and were asked to use dry erase markers to find a city, state, ocean, country, etc. They enjoyed using the maps so much that they didn't even realize that they were learning "map skills." I especially would like to have these desk maps now because of having lost all wall maps as well. Children don't respond well to map skills unless they are given a feeling of enjoyment. I have found through the use of the desk maps that my students get most excited when we use them. I miss this excitement!! I sincerely hope that someone will fund the proposal so that my sixteen fourth grade students will have the privilege of using hands-on materials to help them learn map skills. One of the fun things that I used to do with these maps is to have my students actually create a bank of questions for each other. They had to use to maps to first locate something for which to construct a question, exchange those questions with another student, check their peer's answers, and then show the entire class how to locate the correct answer. Please help my students get to do this again.
