Desk Elliptical to Promote Achievement for Students with Multiple Disabilities

My Students

At our school, our students have a voice.

Our school is a separate, public day school that provides a Special Education Program for students who range in age from three to 21 years, with mild to severe cognitive deficits and multiple disabilities.

Classes are comprised of preschool students in the Preschool Educational Programs (PEP-Intensive Needs Class, Beginnings, Classic, and Collaborative), Pre-K, Head Start, as well as school-aged students five to 21 years old with severe to profound/multiple disabilities.

Instruction is based on the Voluntary State Curriculum, MCPS General Education Curriculum, and/or the Fundamental Life Skills Curriculum.

Our school adheres to the Success for Every Student philosophy to assure that each student maximizes his or her potential. Art, music, physical education, and media/library classes are provided to all of our students.

My Project

I am a huge believer in the brain and body connection. I believe that when we are able to incorporate motion into our day, then we are better able to focus on the lesson at hand. The desk elliptical will be used by children with special needs. Students will have the opportunity to utilize it through the course of the day. My students could cycle while they read independently, cycle while they complete a lesson or cycle during instruction. A desk elliptical will help my students to get out their wiggles, promote positive behavior and stimulate positive learning experiences.

I believe that all children need more opportunities for movement.

My students will feel better as a result of the desk elliptical, so they will in turn have positive gains in their performances. Children were made to move and a desk elliptical would provide the perfect outlet for this need! Thank you!
