My Students

I am anticipating this year's students after a long break away from in-person teaching. It is very exciting and worrisome. Each year brings new challenges and new rewards. I look forward to both.

I teach in a small rural community in a town of 1200 with small farms surrounding the area.

The students I teach are of diverse Social Economic groups. I have some students that have what appears, all the advantages, but there are many families who live without running water. My students come from different Socioeconomic backgrounds but they always play and work together.

I believe in these students and want to give them all possible opportunities to learn safely. The joy I get from seeing a student having that “aha” moment when they really get it is amazing. I believe in my students and I want them to believe in themselves, a major component to this is keeping the school a safe and healthy environment for them to learn.

My Project

Like all teachers, I am concerned about the safety of my students, but an important part of learning is collaboration with their peers.

Collaborative learning has been shown to not only develop higher-level thinking skills in students, but also boost their confidence and self-esteem.

I found a solution that will keep my students safe and allow them to interact with each other. Desk dividers can be created by using PVC pipe and clear shower curtains. These desk dividers will allow students to collaborate while staying safe. Part of my daily math lesson requires collaborations students are given a math challenge to do with their partner from the lesson the previous day. Without the donation of these materials this component of learning will be taken away from these students.

After completing one demo I have figured out the best way to do this. I will get the length of PVC from the local hardware store and my family and friends will help me assemble the desk dividers. I need several other items to make this successful. PVC joints, Clear Shower curtains, Colorful Duct tape and colorful zip ties.

Please help my students learn through collaborations to develop critical-thinking skills, communication and decision making skills.
