Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a Special Education teacher in Richmond Hill, our amazing students come from every walk of life. Our wonderful community is filled with hard-working families that support our school system as best they can with limited resources. Our population is largely military and transient.
I don't think of my students as special needs; I prefer limited edition!
We have a considerable population that includes disabilities ranging from autism, hearing impairments, learning differences, emotional disturbances, and intellectual difficulties, among others. We also have a considerable group of students that are learning English as their second language.
My Project
Offering student choices in seating like wobble chairs, bean bags, stools, and even a comfy rug will do wonders for enhancing our classroom's community, culture, and collaboration. Flexible seating will allow the students to find their ideal spot to be focused and productive.
Ultimately, comfortable students are engaged students!
I want to create a learning environment that is conducive to my student's open collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking.
Research supports that the trend of creating more student control and less teacher control has improved student engagement. I want to make our classroom inviting and a shared learning environment where my students have a sense of ownership that makes them more invested and active in their own learning. These options will provide a variety of high, medium and low seating, and my students will be able to move to furniture based on their needs.
