This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school serves a racially and socioeconomically diverse population. Approximately 50% of students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, and 8% of our students are homeless. Despite these challenges our students arrive at school with enthusiasm and a willingness to learn. For most of my students, my classroom provides them with their only chance to engage in artistic endeavors with materials beyond basic supplies.

Many of my students have primarily experienced art instruction that focuses on drawing and painting.

Some students struggle with drawing and painting and feel that they are not 'good at art'. My hope is that by introducing my students to an entirely new medium, in this case jewelry design using polymer clay, their creativity will be unleashed and they will realize that talent in the arts is as diverse as our student body.

My Project

Students will create a set of polymer jewelry pieces related to a chosen theme. To begin, they will examine a variety of examples of polymer jewelry and then through mind mapping, they will brainstorm themes for creating a unified set. After sketching several ideas, they will decide on three pieces of jewelry to create. They will explore polymer clay sculpting and basic jewelry assembling techniques. Lastly, students will use a digital program to design a marketing poster for their jewelry. If students desire, they can display their posters around campus and sell their jewelry sets during lunch.
