My students are eager to create fantasy worlds for the school plays this year. We have set a goal to get our fall musical to state conference and with properly working tools & safety materials, my students will be well equipped to make this happen. We are part of an award winning theatre troupe.
My students are grades 10-12 and are very creative.
Our school doesn't have much money to help support the arts and help us achieve state and national goals we set each year. This year we had a student get appointed as a state officer for theatre, and we want to help her shine in our program on our stage. This is a feat very few in the state get to achieve. My students come from broken homes with little to no income and every student in our school receives free and reduced breakfast and lunch. Money coming from outside the school is next to none, so we are in need of community support. My students thrive with positive attention since most are African-American and keep hearing about negative images in the media, and they want to be the reason there is a turn around.
My students will be creating the sets for the school plays this year and using these materials for a variety of reasons. We will use the gloves and aprons to help avoid cleaners and paint staining or ruining their hands and clothes, safety goggles to prevent dust & particles getting in their eyes, circular saws for cutting lumber for construction, and paint brushes for painting the set. Art is the one area all students can find a place and feel welcomed and express themselves and all of these materials will help them express themselves in an artistic and practical manner. These skills they are learning are life skills that will help them become self-sufficient adults.
This project will help our students achieve the standards, goals, and assignments for class that other, more well off schools, can achieve with little outside assistance.
It will make my students feel empowered and proud that they created something from scratch that so many people will be talking about in a positive light. Again, we want to have the "WOW" and "IT" factor in order to get our show to travel to conference this January, and having the proper tools and supplies is vital to that.
