My students need a new rug so that they can have somewhere to read and play center games during cooperative learning.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Have you ever tried to read a great book while sitting in a hard chair? Nothing transports a reader into the author's world like having a comfortable place to relax and read. Right now my deserving students only have their desks to read at. It takes away the true fun of reading.
I teach at a low income school in Georgia.
Our school is very old with very little resources to help students enjoy their academic experience. 98% of my students are Hispanic. The majority of them have just come to our country and face many social, cultural and language challenges. Often times, they live in a world in which they have to translate for their parents and take on roles that many children would find daunting and frustrating. In addition to their own personal struggles, many of their parents are illiterate, in both Spanish and English, and can not offer much literacy support. Many of my students also read below grade level and need as much time to increase reading as possible. Therefore, having an environment that supports literacy is of most importance.
My Project
As of right now, the children read at their desks or some resolve to sit on the cold often dirty floor. How can this be fun? Since school is usually the only place where most of my students get to truly enjoy reading, having a warm, inviting rug to sprawl out on would help boost the quality of their reading experience. Most children equate a desk and chair to boredom; which means that if they are sitting at their desk then they will more than likely be despondent to what they are independently reading. The rug will also come in handy when we have class meetings or during their cooperative group time. As a teacher, having a place that supports literacy can only strengthen a skill that many of them lack. I believe that this will make reading more fun, as well as, allow them to actually look forward to independent reading time.
My students are some of the hardest working children I know.
They have a deep desire to learn more. I couldn't imagine being in a new country and be expected to know what the native children know in less time. They deserve to come to an inviting class that they can be proud of; a place that supports the importance of reading. They deserve to have the same nuances and joys that many of us take for granted. I truly believe that this will help enrich their overall reading experience.
