I am excited to present a proposal to expand our STEM program through the Innovation Lab. One key component of this expansion is the development of a new course focused on desert ecosystems. This "Desert Ecology" course will provide students with a unique opportunity to explore and study the intricate relationships within our local desert environment, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for the natural world.
The Desert Ecology course will be an immersive and interdisciplinary learning experience.
Students will delve into the diverse and fascinating world of desert flora, learning to identify local plants, understand botany terms, and cultivate desert foliage in our outdoor Desert Pavilion. Through hands-on activities and fieldwork, students will investigate the adaptations of desert plants to survive in arid environments, explore the ecological roles of these plants in sustaining desert wildlife, and analyze the impact of human activities on desert ecosystems.
This course will integrate science, math, social studies, and ELA, supporting core classes and reinforcing science standards. The curriculum will be based on the Project Botany curriculum from the Institute for Applied Ecology, ensuring a comprehensive and engaging learning experience.
