My Project
This school is a Title 1 Equity Focus campus in the greater Denver metropolitan area. I teach Continuing Development of the English Language (CDEL/ESOL) to grades K-5 to students whose families come to Denver from all over the world -- Ukraine, Somalia, Ghana, as examples, and many additional countries south of the U.S. border. These are highly motivated, financially challenged children. They are hard-working, diligent, and caring individuals with good hearts and healthy curiosity about the world they inhabit.
I wish to enhance the existing units we use to teach language skills by including STEM construction activities to create imaginary outdoor living shelters for the animals and ecosystems we discuss.
The materials include magnetic building units which come together in a classroom teambuilding effort to create habitat for imaginary wildlife. By instilling in early grades the need for human population growth to be sustainable and co-exist with wildlife and the natural world, our future leaders can develop awareness to prioritize the needs of animals along with the goals of people who live and work nearby.
