We live in a rural, poverty area of upstate South Carolina, but these are highly motivated students who consistently (over the past seven years) have won the state's Palmetto Gold Award for academic excellence. When given the opportunity, they work hard in school. Many of them go on to scholarships all across the nation. We seek not to rest on any laurels. We want to blaze new trails and make learning meaningful and relevant. There is a sense of pride here, students who really do try their best to listen and follow directions, to absorb information and become readers who truly appreciate the expanding world around them. In our classroom students are ready and welcome to share new ideas. They help in the community, giving of their time and talent in a population that includes some of the most culturally diverse in the state: Hispanic, African-American, Asian-Pacific, and those of European ancestry. Sadly, they can rarely leave home except in books -- help us travel in books!
