Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember entering your science class and knowing that you would witness something special that day? You would experience something that would spark your curiosity. Whether it would be a lab or a lab demo, you would have something to tell your friends and family about. This is my goal.

My students come from a low income inner-city school environment.

Many enter my class having not experienced science. When I ask them, "What do you remember about previous science classes?", the response I usually get in return is "book work" and "worksheets". I find this disheartening. When I probe a bit more, the students begin to reveal projects or demos that they remember. It's funny, because this is what I remember the most from my days as a student. So I try to provide this to my students as often as I can because I know that these are the things they will remember most from my class. And of course, I hope to teach them chemistry while I am at it.

My Project

I am requesting a few demos to spark my students interest and begin them talking about how these demos relate to chemistry and to their everyday lives. I am also requesting a camera to have my students document what they learn in my class. As part of an end of the year project, I require my students to "teach" a lesson of their own in my class and many of them love to repeat experiments, demos, and examples related to their everyday lives. And they love to document it all.

The demonstrations I am requesting will peak my students curiosity and allow an opportunity for me to teach them the content behind the phenomenon they are witnessing.

The camera will also allow my students to document their learning and hopefully create some memories from their high school science class that are not "bookwork" or "worksheets".
