My Project

Did you know that middle schoolers are learning how to read and write argumentative text? As if they need any help arguing! Not to worry, these same middle school students are also busy learning about narrative and informative text as well.

This year, something that helped my students understand, identify, and ENJOY the different types of texts was Scholastic Scope Magazine.

I tried it with just one of my classes, out of my own pocket, and it was a hit! Each month Scholastic Scope includes a plethora of genres such as narrative nonfiction, argumentative/debate, readers theater, and poetry. Additionally, with a digital membership, we can look at back issues of Scope as well. Because of this perk, we were able to use a past issue about the famous 1962 escape from Alcatraz as our argumentative essay topic. It was so interesting!

My students would greatly benefit from this donation. Unfortunately, a digital magazine subscription is not something my district has the budget for, so that is why I'm reaching out to Donors Choose. We're growing readers here. Readers who may enjoy a short story or poem by Jason Reynolds. Or readers who may enjoy a semi-controversial debate about whether our phones are spying on us. Or - readers who just plain enjoy it all. I promise to teach your middle school students more than just arguing...Scholastic Scope will help with this. Will you help as well?
