My Project
Dance provides an outlet for not only creative, emotional and artistic expression, but provides students with an opportunity to learn and teach kinesthetically. As dance students take a deep dive into space, they will translate what they have learned into movement, which will then be utilized to educate elementary, junior high, and special needs students, as well as community members. This provides students, both as dancers and audience members, the opportunity to gain a depth of knowledge in an entertaining and unique way.
In "Defying Gravity," students will use elements that glow in the dark to teach their audience, including our feeder junior high and elementary school students, about the lack of gravity in space.
Each year we provide at matinee performance for our feeder junior high schools and elementary schools reaching over 1000 school children annually. This yearly matinee creates collaboration and builds community relationships. High school dance students create a presentation in the form of a power point that elementary and jr high teachers use to introduce their students to the theme of each of the dance pieces performed in the matinee. By providing background information, and performance narration, the information is brought to life on stage.
This year we are focusing our dance educational study on "Astro," anything and everything stars, planets, moon(s), astrology, galaxies, black holes, gravity, etc. Each dance in our spring dance concert will educate our audience on an aspect of space that dance students have studied, researched, and translated into movement. The wonder, the awe, the mystery, and the intrigue of our universe will be brought to the stage. Our spring dance concert, "Astro," will take our audience into space, and explore the universe, through original, student created movement.
