I teach 2nd grade in Los Angeles. I have 24 students in my class. There are 5 English Language Learners, 19 Standard English Learners, 3 retained students, and 3 Special Needs (2 ADHD) students in my class.
Learning vocabulary can be tedious. Every child should have the ability to go to College. However, standardized testing (SAT, GRE, etc.) all have major vocabulary sections as part of the test. Not having the vocabulary needed to perform well on standardized testing can be a huge barrier to college.
Learning antonyms, synonyms and definitions by using electronics get all students involved in learning. High readers or low readers find it fun and entertaining. Last year I used the Franklyn Electronic Dictionaries in my classroom and my test scores on the California Standards Testing (STAR) were mostly Advanced and Proficient. Unfortunately, someone stole the electronic dictionary from my classroom. I would love to give that same love of learning to this second grade class.
Our country is in dire need of tomorrow's leaders. Helping my classroom with increasing their vocabulary may not change the world, but it will change theirs'. Showing that perfect strangers can be generous and compassionate is a great life lesson. I thank you. My students thank you, and their parents thank you.
