This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Working in an urban vocational high school presents many challenges. But one challenge, in particular, is getting my students engaged in reading. My students range from non-readers due to learning or behavioral issues to resistant readers because they haven't found that perfect book to hook them.

My hope and goal is that by the end of our year together, my students will be on the path to becoming lifelong readers and writers, ready to face an unpredictable world.

My Project

By providing engaging summer reading titles, students will have the opportunity to continue their reading lives, learn about the world around them, and be ready to discuss how they were impacted by the books they read when we come back this fall.

In addition, books like the ones mentioned help my reluctant readers become more engaged in the books around them.

Providing them with a diverse list of titles will allow more opportunities of choice and interest. Donalyn Miller and Penny Kittle always tout the power of choice and interest for high school students and I see it first hand in my classroom.
