My Students
Self-esteem has been compared to a bucket of water. It starts out full but when we develop negative beliefs about ourselves, it's like poking holes in that bucket and self-esteem drips out. My girls need to plug their buckets and rebuild their self esteem. My girls need a reading circle group.
Since we are located near 2 military bases, many of my students are the children of deployed military personnel.
My 4th grade girls represent the very best in America but many do not have the funds for clothes, school supplies, or recreational reading materials. My girls deserve a chance. The population of my neighborhood is changing. The economic downturn has impacted my students. Over 1/2 of my students qualify for free and reduced breakfast and lunch, but we are not a Title I school. My students are racially and ethnically diverse. It is 39% Anglo; 14% African American/Black; 16% Alaskan Native and American Indian; 7% Asian; 6% Hispanic; 3% Filipino; 15% multiracial. 10% of my students are in bilingual/ bi-cultural programs. This year, when we became a safe harbor school, we had students bused from other sections of town and the ethnic composition of our school changed even more. We have a problem with bullies and low self-esteem.
My Project
Growing up is very challenging without having to deal with the pressure of peers. Sometimes girls have the tendency to be mean to each other. The key to dealing with this is making a safe space for the girls to interact. I plan to create a reading circle group for girls where they can improve their reading and social skills. When they begin to know each other, they become more tolerant and understanding.
Reading is often a lonely activity, and starting a reading circle group is a wonderful way to engage girls in book discussions. A rich discussion of reading materials, where different opinions are explored, will help girls challenge and expand their views. Setting up a reading circle group is a way to engage girls in reading and make them excited about choosing and sharing books. My 4th grade girls need a wide range of books to read but we have no money for these materials. In order to establish the reading circle group, we need the help of Donors Choose.
A reading circle is a great way to promote understanding and respect.
I desperately need series books for my girls who are often both reluctant readers and bullied. I want to use Bullying in Schools as a discussion starter with my 4th grade girls in my library and team it with the reading of new books. Help Townsend Press help us to acquire these important books
