My school is in a small, rural community in northern-lower Michigan. For the most part, my students come from a very low, socioeconomic status. Most depend on free or reduced rate breakfast and lunch, and food backpacks that are sent home weekly. Despite a lack of resources, they are truly some of the most loving and compassionate students I know. Every year, in lieu of a Christmas present exchange, my first graders collect and donate presents to a local children's hospital. They are a curious, hardworking, and kind hearted group of children.
My Project
Over the past year, our school has transitioned to a program called Reader's Workshop to help with reading instruction. It has shown fantastic results but yet I still feel like something is missing from reading instruction.
Kids need to listen to quality stories read aloud and practice responding to those.
For that reason, I decided to purchase an additional program called Rooted in Reading with my own money. This program is used by many teachers and schools throughout the country! The only problem is that each week we need to mentor text to read aloud.
Each mentor text will be used for an entire week, where the class focuses on different grammar, phonics, and vocabulary lessons. By purchasing one set of mentor texts, the four teachers in first grade can share the resources instead of purchasing individual sets.
