This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our school is in the process of creating an inventory of pitched mallet percussion instruments for our students to use. We are striving to have one instrument per student and are closing in achieving that goal little by little. In each of our classes we study how to play various melodies and rhythms as well as accompany ourselves while we sing, incorporate musical movement/dance, and play musical games. Having one student perform on the contrabass bar(s) allows for the ensemble to have more blend/balance, be more attuned to the meter of the music, and creates a fuller harmonic texture that assists everyone in the music making process.

Currently, we have no contrabass bars in our mallet instrument inventory even though our curriculum calls for students to perform on them.

Typically we start studying the function of bass bars in percussion ensembles, songs, movement/dance, musical games, and creative play as first graders and use them up through eighth grade. Since my vocal range is in the baritone register, our classes tend to sing in the keys of C as well as F, and G pentatonic-major-minor for a substantial amount of time in order to engage their light head voice for singing. Having a Studio 49 Rosewood Resonator C Bar allows for a foundation of the tonic pitch in a song or piece of music to be heard and felt more widely when we are performing as a class. Having rosewood bars with xylophones allows for essential overtones of pitches to be heard, thus making a fuller ensemble sound and grounding the singing voice to the desired tonic (home pitch) we are singing in.
