My students take pride in playing in the school orchestra. They excel at it. It is their life's passion. For many of our students, music is what keeps them coming to school. Success in music has touched other areas of their lives as well.
Most of our students live in high poverty.
But that doesn't prevent them from experiencing the richness of life through music. Our students are highly gifted in music. Our school is highly disadvantaged with a 70% poverty rate. Our school is situated in the midst of five federal housing projects. Our goal is to reach as many students as possible through the orchestra program. Through the orchestra program, our students experience performing classical music masterworks. We instill in each of our students the thinking that they can achieve anything they set their minds on. Many of our students would never have had the experience of playing in an orchestra if it were not for this school orchestra program.
My Project
Our students will use this class project of a new 3/4 size double bass to add the base and foundation to our orchestra. Currently we have none. Students who play the bass will be able to play any genre of music, from classical, to Jazz, to Hawaiian, to Popular, to Rock, and more. Our students who play the bass will be able to learn to play a varied genre of music, including rich classical music. It is such a versatile instrument. Our students will also be able to obtain a college scholarship through this much-needed instrument. Our goal is to perform at the Hawaii String Teachers Association Parade of Orchestras at the end of the year.
This project will support the neediest of students in playing the bass in our school orchestra.
Our school orchestra is not any orchestra. It is one comprised of students who strive to become the best. The best students, the best musicians, and the best people in society. Music can and does change lives. It changes our students' lives for the better. Please support our project. Thank you.
