My Project
Less than half of my 170 students, spanning 9th through 12th grade, possess their own personal scientific calculators. While all students have smartphones with calculator apps, these devices present significant distractions, including games, social media, and intrusive notifications, hindering focused learning.
This project aims to provide a classroom set of dedicated scientific calculators, enabling students to concentrate on mastering essential concepts, specifically trigonometric ratios in triangles.
Cell phones are inherently distracting; notifications, social media, and other apps readily divert students' attention from the lesson. A dedicated calculator promotes sustained focus on the mathematical task at hand.
Furthermore, relying solely on cell phone calculators can impede the development of critical "number sense"—the intuitive understanding of numerical relationships. Using a standard scientific calculator encourages students to actively engage with calculations and develop a deeper conceptual understanding. For example, a recent incident involved a student relying on Siri for a simple multiplication problem, highlighting the need for independent calculation skills.
This project requests ACT/SAT-approved scientific calculators to empower students to practice and master essential mathematical skills, maximizing their opportunities for success on standardized tests and beyond. By providing these tools, we can foster a focused learning environment and equip students with the skills they need for academic achievement.
