Deconstructing Stories

Help me give my students access to fiction that plays with alternative forms of storytelling so they can expand their study of dramatic structure.

My Students

My students are curious and creative kids genuinely interested in exploring how stories work. They are readers and thinkers and writers eager to discuss the elements of literature.

These students are eager and ready to read more than the classics.

My Project

Currently in my class we study dramatic structure with Euripides' Medea, Shakespeare's Macbeth and Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun. Kids have a great time following the stages of reversal, recognition, suffering and redemption.

My goal is to add contemporary novels that play with structure in an interesting way.

This will allow my students to deconstruct typical patterns in stories and reconstruct the narrative concept in myriad forms. I know these two books will add an interesting angle for my students to read, analyze and emulate with their own writing.
