We all know third graders need to be reading for comprehension, but what about those kids who still can not decode? These are the kids we need to reach before the gap widens even more!
My students are third graders in a New York school.
Many of my students are English Language Learners, meaning English is not their first language. They come from lower income families, where both parents must work and often can not help with school work. While we are pushing these kids to be ready for a state test, we are forgetting they need to take a step back and cover some basics.
My Project
The materials you can donate to my class, will help my students become better readers. These materials will allow the children to work on necessary phonics skills in a nonthreatening or embarrassing way. I would be able to allow the children to work at a center on the skills that will improve their basic reading skills. Once they are reading more confidently and at higher levels, I can begin the task of reading comprehension and test prep.
I know the battle these children are facing, and as teachers, we are working so hard to keep them up to pace.
Yet, I know if we do not teach them at the level they need, we are frustrating and possibly turning them off to reading. Please help me reach these children and get them where they need to be, before the gap widens even more.
