We are knee-deep in the science of reading-based phonics. My students have grown so much in their ability to decode words based on the new phonics patterns we’ve learned and I’m so impressed with what they can do!
What we need now, most of all, is practice, practice, PRACTICE!
This project will allow me to make a decodable reader that goes along with our phonics curriculum for each of my students to keep at their desks. Our readers are not available to purchase, as they are online-only versions. This means I have to print a new copy of an individual story every time we read it. This is not only time-consuming, but very wasteful on printer ink and paper. Students have trouble keeping up with their stories and they basically become a one-time reader. As we learn more, we need to practice more! With these folders, I will create a complete book for each unit of our curriculum so that each student can have one at their disposal to read during downtime (early finishers, morning work, etc.), as well as regular instructional time. This will also allow them to become accustomed to using a table of contents and finding the correct page in the books. Perhaps the most valuable benefit of this project is that it will allow me to differentiate instruction more effectively and more often, as students will be able to read a story that is on their level within the same reader.
