My Project

This project is for the 1st grade cohort which consists of 3 classes. They were my kinder babies last year and are growing into confident learners. In kindergarten, students worked very hard to learn their letters, sounds and how to read/wow 3 letter words. First grade students rapidly grow their ability to read and write. Students learn ending blends (lt, st, ng), silent e (ake, ine), r-control (ar, or, ir), vowel teams (ai, ee, oi), and diphthongs (oy, ow) in ONE year! This work takes access to decodables which provide students multiple opportunities to practice targeted skills. Students had access to these books in kindergarten and benefitted immensely.

Using decodables, students will increase their ability to automatically read complex words, read smoothly, and comprehend longer texts.

These skills will ensure that our 1st grade students are ready to enter 2nd grade. The books will give teachers opportunities to target needed our missing skills without spending time looking for materials. This project will provide equitable access to materials for students in all first grade classes.
