My Students

" I like working with you because you teach me to read!" I have heard this a handful of times from various students in different grades, when the lightbulb starts to grow brighter for them. It is heart warming to teach a child the gift of reading and to watch them grow their love of reading and learning.

Reading is a fundamental skill for all students to be able to learn in school and to transfer in life.

The students I work with come from various cultural backgrounds, which makes my school diverse in race, religion, culture, and language background. All students in my school have a drive to learn to read and the ability to develop into life long learners.

Once my students become independent readers, their world to literacy will be open to endless opportunities. I want to be able to give my students the tools to succeed, and for them to be able to transfer those independent reading skills to the rest of their lives.

My Project

I work with students who all are low readers. My role in their educational life is to give them foundational skills to build upon to learn to read for life.

Having decodable texts, mentor texts to highlight skill sets and readers theaters scripts allow me to share with my students various opportunities to practice their reading, develop their fluency and increase their confidence with their reading skills.

I would like to use the decodable word family books with my Kindergarten and first grade groups that need repetition. I would like to use the mentor texts to teach specific skills and incorporate writing in response to their reading with my 2nd and 3rd grade groups. I would love to see the 3rd and 4th grade groups practice and perform reader's theater scripts for one another.

I have high hopes for these materials to have an impact on my students' lives.
