Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are very diverse; over 70% of our population is Hispanic. They are very eager to learn English and prove their knowledge through reading and writing. Just over seventy percent of our school district also receives free or reduced-price lunch.

Our students have dedicated teachers to not only teach them a new language, but also the Common Core academic standards.

Students are able to strive and do their best in the classroom because they are comfortable and know our school is a safe and rewarding place. Although school can be a challenging place for some of our students, they always come with smiles on their faces because they feel welcome here.

My Project

After researching a lot about the science of reading, I have come to realize the importance of decodable readers for our students who are learning to read. Currently, we use leveled text from our book room for guided reading groups. I want to add decodable text in the book room so all of our elementary teachers can access them.

Decodable readers use words with phonics patterns that students have recently learned, compared to leveled text that include sight words and high level phonics patterns that have students guessing at words.

I cannot wait to put these decoable readers in our book room and watch our students succeed at reading.
