The Science of Reading research supports having beginning readers use good decodable books instead of predictable texts to learn how to read. Decodable texts helps the reader focus on the phonics skill they are learning and attend to words. Decodable books are like training wheels. As soon as my students have a good phonics base and do not guess at the words, they will be moved into authentic texts.
These books will enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create.
My classroom library is a place that my students really enjoy-I read on the carpet to them, they complete work there, and they read independently! Every student book that is placed in my library is treated with love and care, and they are thankful for the opportunities to read.
With these new books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to read independently at the their skill level.
They will also be able to choose books that interest them. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading.
