This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
My kindergarten students have been working hard all year to learn how to read. In order to build reading stamina, decodable readers are used so that they are able to use the skills we have learned in class in order to read. Not just any type of books will work for my students as they are just learning how to read.
Most importantly, it is my goal to teach my students to use their reading skills to show compassion to others.
There are many senior citizens in our community that are lonely and don't have many interactions with others. I will help my students see the world through the eyes of another by assigning them senior citizens to read to. They will spend time with these individuals in person, and through technology to see how quality time can improve the life of other individuals, and how it is compassionate to care for senior citizens. They will also become pen pals with these senior citizens.
Students will learn to work toward alleviating suffering in others by explaining how a small gesture of quality time and reading can positively impact a person's day. I will foster communication with senior citizens, especially those in local nursing homes, that don't have family members or others visiting regularly. I will bring these scenarios into perspective to my students by discussing what it means to be lonely and how we can help people that are lonely by offering to spend quality time with them.
I will measure success in my students' understanding of compassion through their working to show compassion through these encounters with senior citizens, but also in their showing compassion with their classmates when they see others being lonely.
