Help me give my students decodable books so that they have access to text that they will be successful reading. These phonics decodable series are engaging and appropriate for younger and older struggling readers.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am a literacy interventionist working with struggling readers in grades first through fifth. The goal of my position is to provide my students with small group instruction in specific areas of literacy that they are struggling in.
Most of my students are receiving direct instruction in phonics.
That is why I am requesting decodable books that will allow students to continue to practice reading at their individual level. For example, if a child is learning to decode short vowel words these books have been specifically written to support that.
In school, these books will be used as part of guided reading groups, book clubs, independent and buddy reading. Students will also be able to check these books out to take home, which encourages reading. The best thing about these books is that they are engaging, relevant, and motivate reading because they are designed to support the learning happening at school.
These books will help me teach many standards, some of them are the following:
Phonics and Word Recognition:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.3 in grades 1-5
Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
Fluency:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.4 in grades 1-5
Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.
Key Ideas and Details:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.1 in grades -1-5
Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2
Retell stories, including key details, and demonstrate understanding of their central message or lesson.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.3
Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key details.
