Did you every play an instrument while you were in school? Or did you wish you had played or continued playing longer than you did?
My students are 5th grade beginning band and orchestra students who are about to begin their musical journey.
They are eager to learn and participate in instrumental music. They really like being involved in the program, and over 60% of the students choose to participate.
The demographic of our school is changing. Many of our students now receive free or reduced lunch and rely on the school to supply an instrument their first year.
My Project
Nothing lasts forever! Some of the equipment my students are using has worn out and needs replacement and/or repair. Strings lose the quality of their sound over time and need replacement. Mouthpieces wear down and are no longer able produce a good tone.
To stretch the budget as far as it will go, I have started to do simple repairs on instruments: replacing strings, violin tuners and tail pieces.
To keep the instruments in their best possible condition, I have been replacing cases to provide better protection. To keep the students motivated I have been trying to expand the music library.
