My students are apart of the schools debate team. Debate tournaments encourage students to understand and communicate various forms of argument effectively in a variety of contexts while developing the ability to analyze controversies, select and evaluate evidence, and construct and refute arguments.
My students are very motivated, hard working, competitive, and determined.
I have seen each of their public speaking, writing and research skills grow each year. Our school is about 800 students where sports play a big part of the school community. We are looking to get our team more widely recognized and supported in our community.
My Project
Our high school debate team qualified in rigorous elimination rounds to compete at the Grand NCFL National Tournament in Louisville, Kentucky. While the team won the regional qualifying tournament, the costs of the trip to Kentucky are a significant barrier. Although debate team members are able to reflect research, writing, argumentation, and analysis skills monthly within Massachusetts, competing in a national tournament allows students to enhance those skills at a higher level.
Having the opportunity to attend this tournament will impact the students lives in a positive way.
Traveling as a team, improving academic skills, and taking part in a national tournament will help them achieve success in their college and professional lives.
