Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a school social worker. Most of the children that attend my school are Hispanic (84%) and living in poverty (76%). Many of them are living in households where drugs and violence are prevalent.

I have many children who love to read, but who have never had the opportunity of owning their own books. Most of them struggle with academics and, as a result, our test scores are suffering. These children only have the opportunity of reading the books that they can checkout from our school library, which means they are only reading one book per week.

Every year I try to help as many needy families from my school as I can. I raise money to buy each of their children a pair of school clothes and a gift certificate to a local grocery store. This year I would like to provide the children with a book for Christmas as well.

I have identified all of the needy children in my school and asked each of them this question: "If you could have any book to own, which would it be?" The list of books I have provided are books that they would love to own. Last year we helped provide clothes for 30 children who are living in poverty and attending my school. With your help, this year we can also provide them with a book that they themselves would love to have!
