Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I am a Reading and English teacher at Harlan Community Academy H.S. A large number of students I teach are from low income families. Harlan as a school is participating in D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read). Many of my students have limited access to books. I currently have a small classroom library, but I have no way to encase these books. The classroom needs a cabinet to house these books. Next, I would like to increase the options the students have for the D.E.A.R. sessions. I would like to create a listening center in my classroom. Some of my students have great difficulty in reading independently and this listening station would be a tool for these students to improve their listening comprehension as well as their fluency. This listening station can also be used for better readers as well. The type of the recorded books will come from fiction and nonfiction forms of writing to give the students a wide range of reading materials. The cost to fund these resources will be $720.37.
