Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
All of my students are either deaf or hard of hearing. We are focused on building their vocabulary, bridging the gap between English and ASL, developing literacy skills, and encouraging students to read.
The high school I teach at is the regional school for deaf students in our area, so all of my students ride buses from different parts of the valley to attend school with other kids who are like them.
Most of my students grew up in homes without access to full language and are therefore, severely language delayed. They come from primarily Spanish speaking homes and attend schools taught in English. All the while they are deaf and communicate through American Sign Language. This has created many gaps for acquiring language. Despite the challenges my students face daily because of not being able to communicate freely, they are smart, kind, motivated, and try their best. Although many of them come from very poor families, they are grateful for what they have. Most of my students consider the other Deaf and hard of hearing kids their family because at school, it is the place where people know them the best.
My Project
Many of my students come from homes where ASL is not used. Their parents know little to no sign language so even by the time they get to me at the high school level, they are lacking the language skills necessary to be successful. These materials and supplies will help our classroom have what it needs to practice ASL skills and create a better language foundation for students.
With your help, my students can build language skills while connecting to signs to English letters, and bridge their language gaps.
My hope is that the ASL puzzle books will give us some more fun activities to do in class or to use for homework. The markers and boards will allow us to have more interactive class lesson with active participation. Through these materials, with the help of your donation, my students will continue developing their visual language and make connections to written language and create a better foundation for their learning. Thank you for your time and your support in helping my students succeed.
