My students need a variety of social studies books including those for independent reading, graphic novels, and classroom read-aloud books.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Blake's classroom raised $385
This project is fully funded
My Students
"But, you want me to READ? But I can't! It is too hard!" my students say.
But I know they CAN read! They just need an accessible and interesting social studies classroom library full of leveled readers, graphic novels, and read aloud books.
I work with 5th-8th graders who are language delayed because they are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.
Most of them read English at a 2nd-grade level. They use American Sign Language to learn about the world around them and think that English text is "too hard" for them! As their teacher, I want to show them that history is a series of stories and that they can access those stories through leveled readers, graphic novels, and read aloud books.
My Project
These resources will be used in my classroom in two ways. First, we will use read aloud stories to make abstract historical events into real stories we can understand. These new read aloud titles will allow us to explore more stories and give language to the historical world we study! Secondly, the leveled readers and graphic novels will be added to our classroom library. These library additions will allow my students have appropriately leveled texts that they can independently read, use for research, and gain understanding about historical events during our daily silent reading.
The read aloud texts will invigorate our classes and help students understand abstract concepts in history.
These new classroom library titles will allow students to pick up books at their levels and see that they CAN read and learn independently. This increased confidence, appropriately challenging texts, and daily reading is KEY to them becoming skilled readers!
