Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a diverse, beautiful group of children. My school is unique as I work solely with deaf children and our school serves all of Northern California. Some of my students are close enough to drive and drop off supplies, some are far enough to be a few hour drive. Like many other students, this pandemic creates great inequities and has left me feeling a bit helpless.
95% of deaf children are born to hearing homes; in the current pandemic, many of them are home without access to language.
This pandemic has caused many of my students to lose their safest haven - SCHOOL. My hope is to provide some basic materials and some manipulatives to those who need it the most.
My Project
These materials will enable me to share more age appropriate, social emotional learning materials as well as some excellent tools to support their parents at home. Hearing parents of Deaf children have quite the task right now and there is extra stress at times due to language barriers. Some of these tools can improve the family's ASL skills as well as continue enriching their child's learning experience.
With the use of these materials, I can continue to make learning accessible for my students, their families and their homes.
Some my students are experiencing severe trauma or regression due to lack of access to language at home. My hope is that these tools make the learning curve easier, more attainable and even fun!
