This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In middle school, "fitting in" becomes more important than ever...and for a student with a hearing difference, being different doesn't always feel like a good thing.
My Deaf and Hard of Hearing middle school students are a small, yet diverse, group who are defined by so much more than just their ears!
My classroom consists of athletes, pranksters, artists, leaders, and inquirers. Their differences are what make my students so wonderfully unique!
My Project
My project will help to fill our classroom library with books featuring characters who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. Reading these books will help my students to develop a positive self-identity, seeing others like themselves in positive, inspirational, and engaging reading material. These texts will fill our classroom library, be used for novel studies, and support diversity within our literature focus units. With multiple copies of the texts, students can bring books home to read and share with families, promoting a positive Deaf-identity for the student and their families too!
In addition to the "Deaf Like ME" focused texts, my project includes positive reinforcers to further support social-emotional development.
These materials help to increase student engagement and make learning fun! My project will foster a love of literacy, support diversity, and help students to develop a positive Deaf-identity - making our classroom an inclusive and fun environment!
