Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Going to school in Manhattan offers a wonderland of choices. Our first grade students learn firsthand by visits to the museums and zoos around us. But as I sat the other evening watching "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" on Broadway and actually got tears in my eyes when the children were lifted up in a dream sequence, I thought of my first graders. My co-teacher (who is Deaf) and I have a class of Deaf, hard of hearing and hearing students. Many of them have home lives which are difficult and unstable. I thought if I, an avid theater goer, could well up at children taking flight, how much more would that experience mean to my students. I want them to experience that wonder and awe. I want them to take that with them when more challenges come at them. Although this experience will benefit them in school as writers and story tellers it is the whole child I am thinking of. The magic of live theater can not be underestimated. I know that first hand, as does anyone who has been lucky enough to feel what I felt the other night. I am working with Madison Square Garden to set up interpreters and a date. We are hoping for an 11:00 show on December 1st. Thank you in advance from each of my precious students.
