Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a teacher of the deaf/hard of hearing, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Many of them are being raised in single parent households as well as homes where Spanish is the primary language spoken. Most of the parents use a very limited amount of sign language and mostly gestures to communicate with their child. Although some of my students have hearing aids or cochlear implants, they all have severe language delays.

My students are curious, caring, creative, clever and very active.

They like to move, have fun and love lots of positive attention.

My Project

My students need iPads with cases and an easy charging system to help with reading and math.I will incorporate the iPads into my Reading block and math block. The iPads will be used as a center while I am working with a small group for instruction. Using the iPads would help me differentiate for each student by allowing them to work at their own level. Students who are struggling with letter/recognition will use apps that work on letter identification and proper writing technique. My students will also use these iPads to make flashcards of the alphabet, vocabulary words, reading words and math concepts. Because of their language delays and difficulty hearing, using a picture with a spoken word on the 2nd side of a flash card does not usually help them. They need to have the American Sign Language sign in conjunction with a picture of the word to help with understanding and to increase vocabulary. Since children love to look at pictures of themselves and their peers, they will work with a partner to make their own flash cards. They will also use apps like Nook Kids to read stories at their "just right" level and math apps to practice math facts.

Being a Title I public school, funds for technology has been limited.

What we do have is very out-of-date or broken and unable to be fixed. Providing my students with up-to-date, working equipment will keep them motivated and make learning fun.

My students have so much to catch up on -we don’t have a single minute to waste. The iPads will allow for my reading and math blocks to be more productive resulting in less interruptions of my small group lessons, and very little time wasted for all. With your help, we can work towards minimizing the language gap while using current technology kids already enjoy. Thank you!
