Deaf and Proud: Books and Resources to Inspire Deaf Adolescents

it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our middle school Deaf and Hard of Hearing classroom is filled with students who are in various stages of accepting their deafness. I would love to provide my students with books and resources that represent them and their unique learning needs. The books and resources I am requesting have Deaf and hard of hearing children as the main focus, and I hope to decrease any stigma or shame they may feel by seeing themselves reflected in the books we are reading. Students have also requested some of their favorite books to add to our library. With books that they feel connected and engaged with, the more likely our students are to spend time reading.
Late diagnosis and a lack of resources means that Deaf and hard of hearing children are at extreme risk of significant language and learning delays.
In order to best serve these students and their unique needs, I present content in a multi-modal fashion. Foundational reading and math skills are often significantly delayed, so I am requesting flashcards that the students can practice at home and at school.
Our classroom is also filled with a wide range of students with varying fluency in sign language. Most of our students show great benefit from learning basic to complex signs, and are in the process of learning sign language. I am requesting flashcards and other resources that I can use in my classroom to teach sign language, but also resources that I can send home to practice. Access to sign language can open up a whole new world for our deaf population, and encourage independence as they grow older.
With these books and resources added to our classroom, I believe I will be able to increase students' confidence, pride, and engagement to their deafness and their learning. Thank you!
