Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school, located in Chicago's north side, has a 95% Hispanic population. 98% of our students are considered low-income. Despite being only five or six years old, my students are excited to come to school and learn, but they need adequate resources in both languages to make their learning more meaningful.

My kindergarten students are English language learners with different levels of English fluency.

I want to make sure they have materials available in their native language as well as in English to help them on their dual language journey.

My Project

My students need several books in Spanish, such as ¡El gallo que no se callaba!, El día de los muertos, Yo Recuerdo a Abuelito: Un Cuento del Día de los Muertos, and a Spanish science leveled book set to learn in their native language. They also need book bins to store their new books and a Silhouette Cameo Starter Bundle to create cards, vinyl transfers, and t-shirts reflecting what they have learned about their culture. Using the magnets and command hooks, we will showcase our creations throughout the year.

Gentrification is causing my students' neighborhood to change constantly.

"Fruterias" (fruit shops), "dulcerias" (candy shops), and "taquerias" (taco restaurants) are now being replaced by condominiums and/or retail chains. Although their community's essence is being replaced, I want to instill the essence of their culture in each of my students so they carry it with them forever.
